Contraceptive Implant Duration Extended to 5 Years
The licence for contraceptive implants has now been extended nationally from 3 years to 5 years for contraceptive use.
What this means in practice
- Unless there are clinical concerns, or the individual wishes to have their implant removed earlier, the implant can now be considered effective for contraception for up to 5 years.
- Patients who were previously advised to arrange replacement at 3 years will generally not require a replacement until 5 years after insertion.
- Many patients may still believe their implant is only effective for 3 years, so we expect an increase in enquiries and requests for early replacement or removal.
Key message for patients
If your implant was fitted less than 5 years ago, it is likely to remain effective for contraception and you may not need an appointment for replacement yet.
Patients who have concerns, side effects, or who wish to discuss removal can still contact the practice as usual.
